Make your own DIY Unicorn Christmas Crackers

DIY Unicorn Crackers

I made these DIY Unicorn Christmas Crackers for one of my unicorn-loving friends. I was going to make traditional crackers in a red, green and gold theme. But I didn’t have the right paper and wanted to craft from my stash. So I decided on colour, pink and whimsy. Halfway through I realized I had some supplies waiting to make this cracker into a unicorn!

I actually had leftover snaps because I made DIY Halloween crackers a few months earlier. It’s funny that I bought the snaps for Halloween and not Christmas – it seems wrong. Making them is actually pretty addictive. They aren’t hard to make at all.

Christmas crackers always have the worst gifts in them. They are cheap and often go in the garbage immediately. I’m doing my best to be greener (even though most of my crafts aren’t too earth-friendly) so hate the thought of useless plastic. The great thing about making your own crackers, traditional or magical, is you can customize them. You can make the colour and theme on the outside whatever you wish. The gifts you include are also up to you. As long as they can fit inside you can use them.

Cracker Supplies

  • toilet paper roll
  • cracker snap
  • pretty scrapbook paper
  • glue
  • ribbon
  • I dismantled a unicorn barrette I found at the dollar store for the horn and eyelashes. Since this is likely difficult to find, you could cut the eyelashes out from paper and use sequin fabric or paper for the horn.
  • gift for crackers: chocolate, bath bombs, tea

DIY Unicorn Christmas Cracker Instructions

DIY Christmas Crackers
  1. Place the paper wrong side up. Trace lines on either side of the toilet paper roll. You’ll measure 2cm on either side and draw 1cm intervals.
  2. Roll paper so it overlaps on the toiler paper roll. Cut off excess.
  3. Fold along all six lines. Fold so the crease forms a pocket.
  4. Cut triangles along the crease on either side. Try to stay in between the lines you drew.
  5. Glue toilet paper roll to paper. Roll it tight and glue the edge flush. You’ll also have to glue the end flaps.
  6. Put snap through cracker and glue it down on either end to the paper. Cut off excess.
  7. Tie ribbon on one side of the tube.
  8. Put gifts inside, wrap in tissue paper if you wish.
  9. Tie ribbon on other side of the tube.
  10. Curl ribbons and add any other decoration.
