How to wear Floral on Floral

How to wear Floral on Floral

You may think mixing patterns, let alone floral on floral is crazy. I’m here to tell you to not be afraid to throw prints together. If done carefully you’ll look like an expert fashionista – however if done wrong you’re look like a lunatic.

I live on tropical print and bright colours all year round, especially in spring and summer. I’m not the type to change my colour scheme because of the season. But when the sun is out floral is more of a staple and I’m thrilled to put all the flowers together.

Both these floral outfits below took me from the office to a night or dinner and drinks on the town. Scroll below to see two floral overload looks.

Blue and Black Floral on Floral

Blue and White Floral
Kermit the Frog

When trying to mix patterns for the first time start off slow – go with more muted colours in the same family. This first look is less loud and contains the colours blue, black and white, but done in different ways. The blue top is actually a dress I cut off and made into a shirt. See how I DIY’d it to a shirt with matching pocket square. The flowers are blue and white with a black background. Similarly the skirt has blue and white flowers with a black background. But the skirt has more white and the top has more black. Since they are neutral, they blend and look almost like they belong together.

The more muted print went perfect with the decor at Pastiche which reminds me of Salvador Dali. The darker more simple floral complemented the moody restaurant, where I had a boozy afternoon tea.

Outfit

  • Shirt: Top Shop (used to be a dress, I cut it in half)
  • Skirt: Zumel & Co
  • Heels: Steve Madden

Tropical Dress and Blazer

Floral Blue Blazer and Peach flower dress

This next look is more dramatic and has many more colours. The dress is actually a hand me down (score!) and has yellow, peach and pink flowers on it as a colour theme. The blue jacket is part of a full floral suit I love. I wear this jacket so often because the print is pretty and the loose fit is comfortable but dressy. I wasn’t sure this would work since it’s so blue compared to the dress. But the peach flowers bring out the colours in the dress so it works. My co-workers also liked it and didn’t think it was too much – so that assured me I’m not crazy. I paired it with gladiator sandals.

This look was took me from the office to a Hawaiian themed restaurant, which matched my girly outfit.
