I always wanted to use a donut bar or donut wall at a party. But every time I’ve been near one, I haven’t been able to eat the donuts given my nut allergy. So being able to eat from one is the goal – thus a DIY Donut Bar is the solution. Donut walls always draw attention and seem special. Luckily my sister is getting married so there is a bridal shower to plan. Her main want is a fabulous and beautiful dessert table. I did my best, what do you think? I’ll be doing another post about creating a dessert table from thrifted items – keep an eye out for that.
The main piece of the donut bar is to get an intricate or interesting frame. That is what makes the piece plain or pretty.
I thrifted the frame from Value Village. It came with a painting of fruit in it and funnily a fellow shopper saw me holding it wondering if I was going to get it. Seeing that someone else wanted it I knew I chose the right frame. Turns out she only wanted the painting inside; so we removed it and gave it to her – luckily she had a toolbox in her van. I’m so glad nothing went to waste in this transaction.

Supplies
- Frame
- Pegboard
- Pegs
- white spray paint
- Nails
I got the pegboard at Home Depot and they cut it to size for free there -but be prepared to wait. Thankfully I found one that was white on one side – yay for less painting and a more finished look. The whole DIY cost approximately $25. The frame was $15 and the pegboard and paint was $10-$12.
DIY Donut Bar Instructions
- Clean the frame of any dirt and ensure it is dry
- Spray paint the frame in your desired colour. Multiple coats will likely be required. Let paint dry
- Take your pre-cut pegboard and fit in frame white side down
- Hammer nails on an angle then straight to secure pegboard
- Paint the back of the frame and pegboard if you wish
- Trace a donut to make a template and cut a few out
- Place pegs in spots in pegboard based on template
- Hang donuts on pegs
- Move the pegs and donut templates until you get the right arrangement
I didn’t paint the pegs because you can’t see them and I was being paranoid that I would poison myself. But I’m sure it would be fine if you painted them. You couldn’t see the natural wood with the donuts on them anyway.
To display I put my frame on an easel on a table; but kept the string on the back in case I ever wanted to hang it, which likely would not happen.
A fun fact is I ate more than 1 donut while making this 🙂
What size pegs did you use? None at home depot fit

Hi! I’m not sure the exact size I used. They had a spiral shape on them and fit pretty snuggly. I also bought them at home depot. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
