DIY Spring Flower Crown Video Tutorial

DIY Spring Flower Crown (VIDEO)

DIY Flower Crown - daisies

I didn’t make this crown for any particular reason other than the fact I got hair extensions and just felt I had flower crown hair. Making one has been on my to-do list for awhile and the hair was the perfect excuse to try it. As Halloween approaches it’s good accessory for for a fairy or woodland creature costume. It’s also a vital addition for festival season and Pride. Basically any time you can dress like a lunatic I would recommend wearing one.

Terre Bleu Sunflower Field

Terre Bleu Lavender and Sunflower Field Outfit

Lavender Field Outfit - White and cream outfit

I’ve been wanting to go to the lavender field since last summer- all the pictures look so pretty and magical. Finally after a spontaneous comment about wanting to see it; my friend and I made it on the holiday Monday in August. We arrived just after 11:00 a.m. and all the staff were so so nice and perky, so nice that I actually noticed they were nice. As summer jobs go I bet this is a fun one.

Purple ribbon on sunhat at a lavender field

I think chose the perfect outfit – pretty and comfortable. I thought the white and cream would stand out against the field; do you think it did? The outfit is actually a mid – length lace dress I got from a children’s store in Italy. The tutu skirt is pretty gauzy so a long top is necessary if I’m not wearing nylons. For me this is a very neutral outfit, but I added some purple in it to keep on theme. On the straw sunhat I added a purple ribbon to it for obvious reasons. The flash of purple tassel earrings were made by me. I also painted my nails lilac because I’m a nerd.

Yellow door at Terre Bleu

My girlfriend and I wore matching sun hats for the look and of course to protect our skin. We walked around the first field took too many photos and just listened to the bees – there were so many it vibrated. Of course, we made it to the iconic yellow door and I walked through to put my worries behind me. By this time it was at least 12:30 in the afternoon and we were starving. Being the planner I am I brought a small picnic of sandwiches, veggies and fruit. Then I was disappointed to learn the lavender ice cream wasn’t safe for my nut allergy. Not surprising, but still disappointing. But the farm’s lemonade was nice.

We bought the extra tickets to the sunflower field as well. Two bucket lists in one day! As we walked across the road and farm to the flower field we watched the sky nervously. It was definitely going to rain. We get to the field and there and there are a few raindrops and quickly take a few pictures. Then the rain starts to explode. We put our hats on for coverage and I just decided to accept the rain – it was actually freeing to get caught in the rain in a sunflower field. The scene felt like it was from a movie where the leading lady just learned something vital about herself that would shape her life. There was no way we could have avoided getting wet. After a few minutes it cleared and we enjoyed the flowers with a few more picture. When we walked back to the parking lot I knew it was going to erupt again, which it did as soon as we got to the car.

Gladiator sandals: really old and from Hong Kong, I had to toss them afterwards due to the rain

CNE Outfit

Nut-free Canadian National Exhibition Meal “Let’s go to the Ex”

Going to the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) or “the ex” is a summer tradition. It’s a day for sugary, fried and generally yummy but awful for you food. Every year there is another crazy or disgusting food they introduce. Sometimes it is for the best those food experiments (like a hamburger with two donuts for the bun) are off limits due to allergies.

Having a nut allergy often bars you from carnival fun; but I have found a few staples I always eat at “the ex”. I am also a bit lactose intolerant, but today I’m just going to take pills and deal with the consequences. Below was my “Let’s go to the ex” meal that was allergy-friendly!

Tiny Tom Donuts

Tiny Tom Donuts

Whenever I see a Tiny Tom sign I run for it before there is line. These are tiny, mini sugar donuts that everyone in Toronto is familiar with. It is a CNE and food truck staple. They have various sugar toppings; but I always go with the classic cinnamon sugar. They are best when warm, first you shake all the sugar and eat them from the bag. I always buy extra to bring home and heat up for breakfast, however my partner and I ate them all and there wasn’t enough for the next day!

Hot Bunz

Korean Stuffed Hot Bunz

I needed a ‘real’ meal not just dessert. I used to get these Asian fusion buns at another market and now whenever I see them I’m excited. I got the pair of small ones so that I’d have room for more donuts and could get two flavours. I bought “Seoul City Pulled Beef” which was stuffed with beef and caramelized onions and topped with fried onions and some sort of garlic sauce. The other bun was “Bacon Butter Chicken” which I ate for lunch the next day. It was similar to the beef, but the bacon on top made is extra yummy.  Since they are small they are perfect for snacking.

Ice Cream Waffle Sandwich

CNE-ice-cream-sandwich

I have seen this classic at the ex for years and always thought it was off limits. But when I passed by the stand I saw them cutting Chapman’s ice cream into slices (which is usually nut-free) so I figured I’d ask. To my shock the snack was nut-free. A thick slice of vanilla ice cream was sandwiched between two waffles. It wasn’t a sugary sweet waffle, but still tasted great.

Overall I had a balanced meal, I started with dessert and ended with it! What is your favourite CNE or carnival food?

Note: All allergy sufferers know before you eat you must always ask about ingredients. Please take my reviews as information only; never forget to ask your server about ingredients before you eat. Happy nut-free snacking!

White Lace Boho Shirt

White Lace Boho Shirt (2 Ways)

When I saw this shirt I thought it was gorgeous and so delicate. It has this angelic white lace with dramatic bell sleeves – the sleeves make it! Although they are a bit over the top they are still short enough to not get in the way of things like eating or typing on the computer (fashion needs to be functional).  The details of the contrasting lace at the collar and where the sleeves connect make the shirt even more special.

Below are two ways I rocked this lace piece.

Boho Resort Outfit

Giant Chess Board - Jamaica

Boho Outfit - lace shirt and jean shorts

This was an outfit I wore walking around the resort and having pina colodas in Jamaica. I love how I feel like a hippie who is one with the earth in it.

The shorts have lace and are that ripped-up look. They are totally boho and are surprisingly comfortable- maybe because they are so naked. So together I feel like a free spirit running around the beach. The red pompom earrings are my newest creation and give a pop of colour to the outfit. The purse and hat are embellished DIYs by me.

White Lace Shirt Brunch Outfit

White Lace Boho Shirt - Work appropriate

This look is more dressed up and ‘uptight’ I wore it to a girls brunch. I have also worn this look to the office – so it is less of a hippie outfit (although still pretty).  The tailored cropped pants and black and white splattered purse are more structured than the other look. The sandals were bought in Capri, Italy and have rhinestone butterflies on them.

DIY Sequin Sunhat Video Tutorial

DIY Sequin Sunhat (VIDEO)

DIY Hello Sunshine Sunhat

I have seen these sunhats everywhere. I’m pretty sure the original idea is a knock-off of a quite expensive version (I think it is by Eugenia Kim). I saw one at Holt Renfrew for hundreds of dollars. They are so cute and quirky, but the likelihood of me spending serious cash on a beach hat is slim. Especially an item that is likely to get wrecked or lost on the beach.

I’ve seen lots of funny sayings on them like: “Do Not Disturb”  “Go Away” “Beach Please” and many monogrammed versions. Since the hat seemed overpriced and I could never find the exact one with the colour, phrase and shape I wanted I decided I would DIY one.

Packing for the Beach

The DIY has simple supplies. A sunhat (duh!) I got this one last season at H&M for $7 and have been saving it for this craft. Trim of your choice, I bought my sequin trim at a fabric store by the yard. E6000 glue because it holds up to water.

I thought this craft would be easy, but it was so much harder than I expected. When I glued the trim it wouldn’t easily stick down but stuck to everything else together. I had to use tweezers to push the trim to the hat because it kept sticking to me. I almost thought this was going to be a craft fail. I also have horrible penmanship (and trust me it is really bad) so I was worried free-handing the writing would be disastrous. But I think you can tell what I wrote!

Supplies

DIY Sunhat Supplies

  • Sunhat
  • Sequin trim
  • E6000 glue
  • Masking tape (to temporarily secure the letters)

Directions

  1. Decide on the phrase you want to write. I went for “hello sunshine” Just Google and you’ll find lots of cute examples.
  2. Slowly write the words with the sequin trim and secure with masking tape to the hatDIY Sunhat Hello
  3. Glue the sequin trim to the hat and remove the tape as you glue.DIY Sunhat in progress
  4. . Let dry for at least a day.

Note: If you are comfortable you don’t have to tape the letters first you can go straight to gluing. But I knew I would mess that up; so I wouldn’t dare be that bold

Hello Sunshine Banana Bikini

Pink Jumpsuit in Jamaica

Hot Pink Banana Republic Belted Jumpsuit (2 Ways)

I wanted to get something new for my Jamaica trip. I felt like I had already worn all my resort appropriate clothes and wanted something fresh to make me feel amazing- so I searched for bright colours. When I saw this electric pink jumpsuit it screamed at me. I was worried it wouldn’t fit but luckily I scooped up the last one in my size! See below for the two slightly different ways I styled it.

Look 1 – Resort Outfit

Pink outfit and red necklace

DIY Straw Pom Pom Clutch

The secret with bold coloured jumpsuits is it looks like you put a lot of effort in but you didn’t since it is just one piece. The best thing is, it has pockets?! It may not look it but it is comfortable and fairly light.

I wore this outfit to our farewell to vacation dinner on our last night in Jamaica. I paired it with a statement gold and red necklace and stretchy neon bracelets. I love these silver flat sandals, I got them made when I was in Capri. This cute little old man had a shop where you could pick the sandal style, leather colour and size! I always feel fancy when I wear them.   Another great thing about this pant suit is I didn’t need to wear heels with the suit- the length is perfect for flats.

The purse is an embellished purse from Michael’s craft store (DIY coming soon). It is perfect for the climate and actually holds a lot.

Look 2 – Funky work outfit

Turquoise Sandals - Sam Edelman

This looks is almost the same but a bit more funky. Instead of a chunky necklace I wore a long bullet necklace -it has a crystal inside an upcycled bullet. You can’t see the shoes in the full body picture because unfortunately my photographer cut them off! But they are turquoise sandals with gold details. The shiny Rayban glasses also make the look more street.

Birthday Cake Cookies (nut-free)

Creme de Lacombe Birthday Cake Cookies (Nut-free)

Having a nut allergy often makes it difficult to eat fun things. But if you bake yourself, you can eat practically whatever you want.

I’m not a gifted baker, but I have been obsessed with Kelsey Lacombe’s blog and Instagram full of colourful cakes and cookies lately. Creme de Lacombe is a feast for the eyes, check her out! Her photos make me hungry every day. Sadly, finding cookies like the ones she posts in a store would be hard for me to eat given my nut allergy. So making my own is often the only choice. For a get together I had I decided to try to re-create her awesomeness.

I modified her Birthday Cake Cookie Sandwiches to ensure they were Ashley-friendly (meaning nut-free). The first picture below are Creme de Lacombe’s masterpieces – I know seeing my version next to hers makes it seem like a craft fail – but I’m still happy with how mine turned out.

Birthday Cake Cookies

Please note I was going to make the cake sandwiches…but on my first attempt I was unable to make perfectly round cookies. With practice hopefully I’ll master it. But although they are not perfectly round they still tasted great and had magical sprinkles.

I modified a few of her ingredients and simplified the recipe (didn’t do the sandwiches) due to my diet and allergies, but I don’t think it made a difference in taste. They were also pretty easy to make- I’ll just make them smaller next time.

Recipe courtesy of Creme de Lacombe

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar (plus more for tops of cookies)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup white cake mix – I used Betty Crocker white cake mix – it was safe
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tbsp. corn starch
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles – I made sure mine were nut-free
  • 1/2 cup mini white chocolate chips – I used Chippits – they are amazing and I can eat them!
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients.
  3. Using a handheld or stand mixer (I used a stand mixer) fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar until smooth and creamy. Add the egg and vanilla.
  4. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, incorporating a little at a time until combined.
  5. Stir in 1/4 cup of white chocolate Chippets chips and 1/4 cup of sprinkles.
  6. Using a small cookie scoop, evenly distribute balls of cookie dough onto cookie sheet.  Next time I will make my scoops smaller!Raw Birthday Cookie Dough
  7. Sprinkle some of the extra sugar, sprinkles and white chocolate chips on top of the balls of dough.
  8. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass or measuring cup.
  9. Bake for 10 minutes.
  10. Let cool on wire cookie rack.

Birthday Cookies cooling on wire cookie rack

Tip: If using one cookie sheet, make sure you let it cool in between batches of cookies. If you scoop the dough onto the hot cookie sheet, the cookies will start cooking before they get into the oven!
I am going to practice my baking so that I can make the sandwich version next time. Even though they weren’t perfect, they tasted great and that’s all that matters. It is the inside not the outside that is crucial!

I hope Creme de Lacombe isn’t too horrified with my version of her cookie 🙂 What do you think of my baking attempt?

Ted Baker Scalloped Dress

Ted Baker Scalloped Dress

I have always admired Ted Baker’s line. It is well made, beautiful and classic.  But I’ve held back purchasing because it is hard to justify spending a certain amount of money on clothes. However, I came into some fun money and thought the perfect thing to do with it was to get something I’ve wanted for awhile.  Since this this money was unplanned and this dress was on sale I convinced myself it was okay to buy. Now I may be addicted to his line.

Curtsy in a Scalloped Dress

The dress has pockets!

I wore this dress to a fancy celebration dinner for my four year anniversary. We went to Flor de Sal, a restaurant near Casa Loma which we stumbled upon a few Halloweens ago. When we went the first time we were definitely dressed inappropriately; now it is a place we go on special occasions.

What I love about this dress is the attention to details. Aside from the pretty grey and floral motif – the scalloped hem and sleeves give extra special details. There is also a copper exposed zipper on the back. And wait – it has pockets! The dress also has stretch and is big circle skirt you can actually eat in. The bright pink purse is also Ted Baker and I scored it at Nordstrom’s The Rack.  I saw it and it screamed me; luckily I’ve been a pro at spotting sales lately.

Short Wavy Hair

The heels have ankle straps that make them less typical. I also did my best to curl my hair for the occasion, but sadly it was almost flat when we got to the restaurant due to the wind.

Eating Rainbow Unicorn Cake

Rainbow Unicorn Surprise Cake

If you want a Rainbow Unicorn Surprise Cake to be nut-free likely you’ll have to make it yourself. But I don’t have enough patience to make myself a just because layer cake.

I was leaving a project at work to take on another role. My fabulous co-worker often would bake for the team, but sadly I could never eat it. Guaranteeing a nut-free cake in a contaminated home is tricky. But for my going away week she asked me if I had any requests – and what do you think I asked for?

MAKE ME A RAINBOW CAKE! Pretty please.

I was so obsessed with this cake I decided to make a video to commemorate it. Wait for the surprise inside…

I’ve never been able to eat a cake like this before and it has always been a dream to get one. Given how time-consuming it must have been I was surprised she delivered something so elaborate – I totally didn’t expect anything. I was half-joking when I requested it – I am so grateful for the effort! She went the extra mile: she bought a new bag of flour, new paper towels, disinfected her kitchen multiple times, then became paranoid that her clothes may have been contaminated with previous nut residue. To make her feel better I made choking noises after the first bite – I’m a jerk. Nonetheless baking for me was likely a stressful experience she will never do again lol.

Sprinkle Cake

Look at all the rainbow and sweetness overload! So much colour; I’m dying! The Skittles inside made me lose it.

DIY Sparkle Champagne Bottle

DIY Sparkle Champagne Bottle (VIDEO)

Veuve Sparkle Champagne

This craft adds something special and fun to any party. I’ve made these sparkle champagne bottles for many occasions. I made the silver Martini Astor bottles specifically for a bachelorette, the pink bottle was for the bride and the mini bottles was for the bridesmaids. The Veuve bottle was for my sister’s champagne birthday. The purple rainbow one was for my unicorn birthday party. Glitter elevates any occasion!

It is also super easy! See video and step by step instructions below.

Supplies

Supplies for sparkle champagne bottle

  • Alcohol bottle of your choice
  • Spray adhesive – I used Krylon. You can also use Modge Podge but it is messy, takes longer and doesn’t work as well.
  • Glitter colour(s) of your choice! Warning glitter will be EVERYWHERE!

Directions

Sparkle-Champagne-Tutorial

  1. Put masking or painter’s tape around the bottle cap if you are spraying the whole bottle with glitter- this will ensure you don’t get glitter on it and it will still allow you to open the bottle. Optional: Put tape on labels or anything you want to not have glitter on it. The the picture above I put tape on the labels so they would be visible
  2. Spray a light line of  aerosol glue down the bottle (keep a distance of around 10 inches)
  3. Sprinkle glitter on glue
  4. Repeat steps two and three until bottle is covered
  5. Let dry then remove the tape
  6. ENJOY!

Unicorn Champagne

That’s it! Such an easy way to add glitter to your party. How do you add sparkle to your parties? I’d love to hear from you.
